Egeskov Castle

Egeskov Castle is a beautiful, historical and amazing castle which history goes back more than 460 years. It was completed in 1554 and is famous for being the best preserved moat castle in Europe. It offers among others fascinating details such as the fact that the castle has some 2,000 window panes.

It is situated in the most idyllic area and is build in the middle of a lake on a foundation of oak pilings, according to legend, in such quantities that “it took an oak forest to do it”.

In 1967 a Veteran Car Museum opend in the castle and you will here find a beautiful, stunning and amazing selection of veteran cars. Around 50 cars from 30 years old to more than 100 years old. All restored beautifully with the respect of the history of the car.

You can also experience bicycles of all ages from 1860´s to 1900´s, all original. While seeing all the cars and bicycle´s you might close your eyes and imagine how life was 100-150 years ago using these vehicles.

The fairy tale castle was also visited by the world famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. On one of his visits he made a little paper doll and called her Augusta Snorifass. You are able to see this historical paper doll here on this magical castle. Hans Christian Andersen loved to make these paper doll´s while telling story´s about the fantasy figures his scissors brought to life. Hans Christian Andersen always brought his scissors with him, and with this little exhibition at Egeskov we invite you into his universe.

It is also possible to see some of the dresses of Egeskov castle´s fashionable women baroness Camilla and her daughter Countess Jessie had.

The castle is of course surrounded by a beautiful park. The park was named “Best European historic garden” in 2012 and one of the 12 most fabulous gardens in the world by CNN Travel in 2013. The garden is divided in to different parts such as “The Garden of Life” which symbolizes the passage of time, the rhythm of the year and stimulates the senses. You´ll also find “The baroness´s garden”, “The renaissance garden”, “The old maze” among others.
